About HomeCostTab

Home-improvement pricing is famously murky. Most people have no idea whether a contractor's quote is fair, what a project costs a few towns over, or how much of the bill is materials versus labor — until the invoice lands. HomeCostTab exists to fix that: a simple, honest estimate of what home projects cost in the US, so you walk into the conversation already knowing the ballpark.

Where our numbers come from

Our ranges are compiled from publicly available contractor fee data, cost-estimator aggregators and remodeling-industry surveys, then sanity-checked against what real homeowners report paying. They're national ballparks, not quotes — prices vary a lot by region, home size, materials and how busy local pros are. The only way to know your real price is to get bids.

How we stay free

HomeCostTab is free to use. We keep the lights on through advertising and through commissions when readers choose services we link to — for example contractor-matching, quotes or financing. That never changes the prices you'd pay, and it never changes what we tell you. See our affiliate disclosure.

Not professional advice

We publish cost and general information to help you budget and get better bids. Nothing here is engineering, construction, legal or financial advice. For decisions about your specific home and project, consult licensed local professionals.
